About Motown to Tree Town

I live and work in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  This blog serves primarily to indulge my amateur passion for learning and understanding American cities, what makes them work, and what makes them fail.  I’m especially interested in learning what factors influence the size of a city or region’s gay community; advancing alternatives to commuting by car; and in the troubled past and present of Michigan’s cities, as well as potential solutions for improving their future.  In the process, I hope to be able to contribute my own insights to, and engage others in, the growing online discussion on these topics.

The title of this blog reflects the complex relationship between Motown, the city of Detroit, where I lived a little over a year in 2007-2008, and Tree Town, Ann Arbor, where I have lived since.  As a local, I hope to bring my unique perspective on these very different places to bear on this blog.

As of July 2011, I now also have a Tumblr where you can get more Motown To Tree Town in smaller but more frequent doses.

  2. ditto, what Bruce said

  3. I really think this is a great blog concept! I find that I talk a lot about Detroit and its underwhelming impact now on the world. But often that opens the door to discussions on all the “major” cities in Michigan and how they are becoming piles of rubble in the aftermath of the crisis. Living so far away from home I am a bit disconnected to what is actually happening. Thank you AH for writing this!
